Educational Approach
Montessori based education is an educational approach developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator. Montessori based education started in the early 20th century. This method of education is used in many countries around the world including The United States, of America Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, The United Kingdom, and many more countries. Montessori education is different from traditional – style of education. There are various factors that makes Montessori method different from traditional method. Some key difference are –
Ideology and approach
- Traditional approach - It follows a structured, restrictive and teacher centred approach. The teacher is the primary source of knowledge i.e teachers lecture and students are passive receipts of information.
- Montessori approach - It is a child - centre learning method of education and follows a hands-on approach. The teachers are only facilitators to the child. They guide and support the child’s curiosity, creativity and thinking.
Classroom Environment
- Traditional approach - in a traditional classroom desks are arranged in rows and the teacher stands in front of them and delivers the lesson.
- Montessori approach -the classroom is designed to be children - friendly with well organised learning material, cluster of student sized table, student in small groups in the class, open area for floor work and study centres. Study centres are surrounded by shelves of books and materials. The classroom is organised in orderly and logical manner.
Learning Material
- Traditional approach - it relies on textbooks and instructions.
- Montessori approach - it uses specially hand-on material that encourage independent learning exploration. Students are allowed to freely move around the classroom and choose resources and work accordingly.
Curriculum
- Traditional approach - students learn at the same pace as one another and follow a fixed curriculum. There are set subjects and topics for each grade.
- Montessori approach - it emphasises on individual learning. It allows children to progress at their ow pace and based on their unique interest and abilities. We firmly believe that every child is different. Montessori curriculum is flexible, integrated and incorporates real life experience in classroom.
Assessments and evaluation
- Traditional approach - assessment in traditional education often involves tests and grades to measure their academic performance.
- Montessori approach - Montessori classroom focus on qualitative assessments and observing a child on various parameters like developments, interest and progress.
